Why Golfers Get Elbow Pain (And How to Fix It)

Elbow pain is one of the most common issues we see in golfers. Many assume it is simply part of the game, but that is not the case.

Interestingly, not all elbow pain in golfers is actually golfer’s elbow. Many golfers develop tennis elbow, which affects the outside of the elbow. Regardless of the type, elbow pain is rarely just a local problem.

It is usually a result of how the entire body is moving during the swing.

Common Causes of Elbow Pain in Golfers

Overuse and repetition are major contributors. Golf involves repeated swings that place stress on the forearm muscles and tendons.

Poor mechanics up the chain also play a role. Limited shoulder mobility, reduced trunk rotation, or poor sequencing can increase the load placed on the elbow.

Grip mechanics are another overlooked factor. Holding the club too tightly or with poor positioning increases strain on the forearm.

Finally, sudden increases in playing volume are common. Many golfers go from minimal activity to frequent rounds without building the necessary capacity.

Why Treating Only the Elbow Does Not Work

Many people try to fix elbow pain with rest, ice, or bracing. While these may reduce symptoms temporarily, they do not address the underlying cause.

If the movement pattern or strength deficits are not addressed, the pain often returns when activity resumes.

How to Fix Elbow Pain

The first step is managing irritation. This does not mean complete rest, but rather modifying activity to stay within a tolerable range.

Next is building tendon capacity. This includes progressive loading strategies starting with isometric exercises and advancing to isotonic strengthening.

Addressing the root cause is critical. This involves improving shoulder mobility, thoracic rotation, and overall movement patterns.

Finally, a structured return-to-golf progression helps ensure that the elbow can tolerate the demands of the game.

Final Thought

Elbow pain is common, but it is not something you should simply play through. With the right approach, most golfers can return to playing pain-free and often with improved performance.
