What Is Remote Therapeutic Monitoring?

Remote Therapeutic Monitoring, commonly called RTM, allows your physical therapy team to support and monitor parts of your recovery when you’re not physically in the clinic.

Think of it as an extension of your regular physical therapy visits.

During your appointments, your physical therapist evaluates your progress, provides hands-on treatment when appropriate, progresses your exercises, and helps guide your recovery.

But what happens during the days you’re not at Seattle Rehab Specialists?

That’s where RTM can help.

  • Your participation in your home exercise program
  • How you’re responding to your exercises
  • Symptoms or difficulties you’re experiencing
  • Your overall progress between visits

Your home exercise program can then evolve along with your recovery rather than simply remaining the same until your next appointment.

Our patient RTM program uses Wibbi Vive, a digital platform that allows patients to access exercise videos and instructions, mark exercises as completed, and provide feedback about how they’re feeling.

Your Recovery Doesn't Stop When You Leave the Clinic

Your physical therapy appointments are important, but they’re only one part of your recovery.

What you do between appointments matters too.

You may have questions after trying an exercise at home. An exercise that felt good last week may suddenly become uncomfortable. You might not remember exactly how your therapist wanted you to perform a movement. Or you may simply be unsure whether what you’re experiencing is normal.

Traditionally, you might have to wait until your next physical therapy appointment to ask those questions.

Remote Therapeutic Monitoring gives you another layer of support between visits.

Instead of feeling like you’re on your own with your home exercise program, RTM helps keep you connected to your Seattle Rehab Specialists care team.

How Remote Therapeutic Monitoring Works

1. Complete Your Home Exercise Program

Access your personalized exercises, videos, and instructions through Wibbi Vive and complete your program as recommended by your physical therapist.

2. Track Your Progress

Record your exercise participation and provide feedback about how you’re feeling so your care team has a better understanding of what’s happening between appointments.

3. Stay Connected

Your monitoring therapist can communicate with you through text, email, phone, and features within Wibbi Vive, based on your preferred method of communication.

4. Adjust When Needed

If you’re having difficulty with an exercise, experiencing pain, or don’t understand part of your program, your monitoring therapist can help troubleshoot the problem and make appropriate adjustments. When something needs additional attention, they can communicate directly with your treating physical therapist so everyone stays connected.

One Care Team Working Together

Remote Therapeutic Monitoring doesn’t replace your physical therapist or your visits at Seattle Rehab Specialists.

It extends your care between visits.

Your monitoring therapist is a licensed professional who works remotely as part of your care team. They can help answer questions, troubleshoot your exercises, make appropriate adjustments to your home exercise program, and communicate with your treating therapist when needed.

Your treating physical therapist and monitoring therapist work together to create a circle of communication around your recovery.

You aren’t simply being given exercises to complete on your own. You have a team supporting you throughout the process.

Why Seattle Rehab Specialists Uses RTM

At Seattle Rehab Specialists, we believe successful physical therapy is about more than what happens during your scheduled appointment.

RTM allows us to extend our People First approach to care beyond the walls of our clinic.

Our goal isn’t to simply give you a list of exercises.

We want you to understand your program, feel confident performing it, and have access to support when questions or problems arise.

  • Maintain communication between visits
  • Identify problems with your home program sooner
  • Answer questions when they arise
  • Make appropriate adjustments to your exercises
  • Better understand how you’re progressing outside the clinic
  • Help you remain consistent with your rehabilitation program

The result is a more connected approach to physical therapy – in the clinic and at home.

Remote Therapeutic Monitoring FAQs

1. What is Remote Therapeutic Monitoring (RTM)?

Remote Therapeutic Monitoring is an extension of your physical therapy care that helps your care team stay connected with your recovery between appointments. Through Wibbi Vive and communication with your monitoring therapist, we can monitor your home exercise participation, understand how you’re responding to your program, and help address questions or problems that arise between visits.

2. Why does Seattle Rehab Specialists offer RTM?

A significant portion of rehabilitation happens outside the clinic. We want our patients to have support during that part of their recovery too. RTM creates another connection between you and your care team so that questions, exercise difficulties, or changes in symptoms don’t always have to wait until your next appointment.

3. Am I communicating with a real person or an AI agent?

You are communicating with a real person – not an AI agent or automated chatbot. Your monitoring therapist is a licensed professional working remotely as part of the Seattle Rehab Specialists care team. They serve as a liaison between you and your in-clinic physical therapy team when you’re not attending PT visits. They can help answer questions, troubleshoot your home exercise program, and communicate directly with your treating therapist when needed. Technology helps us stay connected, but your care and communication come from real healthcare professionals.

4. Does RTM replace my visits with my physical therapist?

No. RTM is designed to support your in-clinic physical therapy, not replace it. You’ll continue working with your treating physical therapist during your scheduled appointments. Your monitoring therapist provides another layer of support during the time between those visits.

5. How will my monitoring therapist communicate with me?

Communication can occur through text, email, phone, or features within Wibbi Vive, depending on your preferred method of communication. Your monitoring therapist can also use Wibbi Vive to help you successfully complete and progress your home exercise program.

6. What if an exercise hurts or I don't understand what I'm supposed to do?

This is one of the reasons we offer RTM. Your monitoring therapist is a licensed and skilled professional who can help you troubleshoot your home exercise program. They can discuss what’s happening, answer questions, and make appropriate adjustments to your program when needed. If an issue needs the attention of your treating physical therapist, the monitoring therapist can communicate directly with your in-clinic team so we can determine the appropriate next step.

7. Do I have to participate in Remote Therapeutic Monitoring?

No. RTM is an optional part of your care at Seattle Rehab Specialists. We’ll explain the program and give you an opportunity to ask questions before you decide whether you’d like to participate. You can choose to opt in or opt out of RTM.

8. Is RTM only available to Medicare patients?

No. Seattle Rehab Specialists makes Remote Therapeutic Monitoring available to patients regardless of their insurance provider. Your care team can discuss whether RTM would be appropriate as part of your individual physical therapy plan.

9. How much does Remote Therapeutic Monitoring cost?

Any costs associated with Remote Therapeutic Monitoring will be explained to you before RTM is activated. Insurance benefits and individual circumstances can vary, so we prefer to discuss your specific situation with you rather than provide generalized cost information that may not apply to your coverage. You’ll have an opportunity to understand the program and associated costs before deciding whether you’d like to participate.

10. How do I get started with RTM?

If you’re a new patient, you don’t need to do anything before your evaluation. Your physical therapist will determine whether RTM is appropriate for your plan of care and can answer any remaining questions. Our team will also explain any associated costs before activation. If you decide to participate, we’ll help you get started with Wibbi Vive and connect you with your monitoring therapist.

During your evaluation, your physical therapist can discuss how Remote Therapeutic Monitoring may fit into your plan of care. Our team will explain any associated costs, answer your remaining questions, and give you the opportunity to decide whether you would like to participate.

No pressure. No surprises. Just another way for our team to help support your recovery.
